Combatives Testing

“There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.” - Unknown

In just 20 classes, you started to become aware of various situations and positions by moving in slow motion in Jiu Jitsu. This newfound knowledge helped you earn your first stripe.

Over the next 20 classes, you focused on retaining and recalling more information by cooperatively helping other students. This improved your understanding of the techniques and led to your second stripe.

Continuing your journey, you spent the following 20 classes honing in on the smaller details of each move and asking questions. This attention to detail helped you refine your technique and earn your third stripe.

Finally, in the last 20 classes, you've been working on executing the moves more dynamically and fluidly. With feedback, it was easier to string techniques together. This progress has culminated in earning your fourth stripe.

During Reflex Development classes, instructors actively engaged with you in discussions to assess your understanding of the material. This interactive approach helped you solidify your knowledge and identify areas where you may have needed further clarification.

While you earned your four stripes in 80 classes, it took you closer to 120-150 classes before you felt truly prepared to test.

Earning stripes is a great milestone, but it's important to remember that it's just one part of the journey. Testing requires a much deeper understanding of the techniques and the ability to execute them consistently under pressure.

For you, the additional time you spent training was invaluable. It allowed you to solidify your understanding of the techniques, develop your reflexes, and build your confidence. You also had the opportunity to drill techniques with a wide variety of students, which helped you improve your timing and execution.

Now, after countless hours of training, you feel confident and ready to take the test.

But what does the test look like?

The Combatives test consists of five drills: Mount, Guard, Side Mount, Standing, and Fight Simulation. Each drill must be completed within 5 minutes or less.

To pass the test, you can only miss a total of 10 points combined across all five drills. This means it's essential to use every minute of each drill to execute your techniques perfectly. Don't feel rushed; take your time to ensure flawless execution. Remember, perfect technique over time will lead to quicker and more efficient movements.

The test points are evaluated in three categories: Details, Reflexes, and Conviction. Demonstrating a deep understanding of the techniques, quick reflexes, and unwavering belief in your abilities will be key to success.

The Combatives test consists of 74 techniques spread across five drills. Here's a breakdown:

  • Mount Drill: 25 techniques

  • Guard Drill: 21 techniques

  • Side Mount Drill: 14 techniques

  • Standing Drill: 14 techniques

By mastering these techniques, you'll be well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the Combatives test and perform well during the Fight Simulation.
