Help Each Other
We all seek progress and our own safety. That’s why we are here to train Jiu Jitsu. Part of all martial arts schools is the idea that you can train safely with a diverse number of training partners. We also want to see our training partners’ progress. The African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” fits well here. We as a school want everyone to progress and want students to help each other out. Could we move faster? Possibly, but where is our tribe? Our tribe is a group that sticks together and helps care and raise the next generation. It doesn’t matter if you have been training ten years or just starting, we all have things that we can contribute to the class and training partners. We may try something and find out that isn’t the thing we can contribute, but we try again. We will find it. Some have knowledge. Others have experience. Each of us comes from a diverse background that can help us redefine what Jiu Jitsu is and how we train.
With the new year, try especially to find new ways to contribute to the tribe. For kids, did you help your training partner learn the move? Or did you just frustrate them doing what they were told? For adults, did you really commit to behaving like the indicator for the move? Or did you branch away to early for them to understand what they are working towards.
